2018 UNIVERSITY MARIBOR CHAMPIONS FOR UPM

University programming marathon (UPM, http://tekmovanja.acm.si/upm) is a Slovenian competition for students in their knowledge of programming, data structures and algorithms. The university champions for 2018 have been determined in the final round. This year champions are: Vid Keršič, Niko Uremović, Mitja Žalik. The runners up are: Aljaž Jeromel, Gal Meznarič, Jan Mikolič. Members of both teams are students of Computer Science and Information Technologies. Both teams will participate at CERC 2018, Prague, Czech Republic (https://contest.felk.cvut.cz/18cerc/), which will be held from 30.11.18 do 2.12.18. Countries participating in CERC are Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The best teams from CERC will be participating in the world finals in Porto, Portugal, from 31.3.19 do 5.4.19.

On Friday, September 28th, 2018, a greetings to the freshmen took place at our faculty at 10 am. At the joint presentation, the students of the 1st year of study programs were welcomed by the vice-dean for education, prof. dr. Bojan Grčar, vice-dean for students, Maruša Lešnik, coordinator of teachers' tutors, assistant prof. dr. Alenka Hren, and coordinator of students' tutors, Nina Katarina Bračko. A joint presentation was carried out in the lobby of the G2 facility. The presentation of the Computer Science and Information Technology study program - academic level then took place at G2-Gama and professional level at G2-P02. After the presentation, the students' tutors showed the faculty to the freshmen. Europe Code Week is a grassroots initiative which aims to bring coding and digital literacy to everybody in a fun and engaging way. Code Week is going to be held from October 6 - 21, 2018. The Institute of Computer Science supports this event as it contributes to computer literacy. Last year, we conducted 17 events in elementary and secondary schools. Students of study programs Computer and Information Technologies are invited to perform an event in their home town. This year, we are organizing the 5th Student Computer Science Research Conference. The conference will be held as part of the conference multi-conference Information Society (IS'18), on 9 October, at Faculty of Computer and Information Science in Ljubljana. We invite you to actively participate at the conference with preparation of your scientific papers. The accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings in electronic form (CD).

SYNERGY SUMMER SCHOOL ON EFFICIENT MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION

Jožef Stefan Institute and the H2020 SYNERGY project partners organize a summer school on "Efficient Multi-objective Optimization" that will take place from 27 to 31 August 2018 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The summer school will consist of lectures by internationally recognized experts in multi-objective optimization and surrogate modeling, and work in groups with the possibility of solving practical multi-objective optimization problems.

Assoc. prof. dr. Jaroslav Porubän from Tecnical University Košice, Slovakia, is visiting us from March 11 to March 16, 2018. He will give lectures on Programming Languages for students in study programme "Computer Science and Information Technologies".

Jaroslav Porubän is Associate professor and the Head of Department of Computers and Informatics, Technical university of Košice, Slovakia. He received his MSc. in Computer Science in 2000 and his PhD. in Computer Science in 2004. Since 2003 he is the member of the Department of Computers and Informatics at Technical University of Košice.  Currently the main subject of his research is computer language engineering concentrating on design and implementation of domain specific languages, computer language composition and evolution.

The visit is part of the project "Integration of visiting foreign experts and higher education lecturers into the teaching process as the pillar of quality development of the internationalization process at the University of Maribor", which is co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport."

Assoc. prof. dr. Geylani Kardas from Ege University, Turkey, is visiting us from November 20 to November 24, 2017. He will give lectures on Multi-Agent Systems for students in study programme "Computer Science and Information Technologies.

Dr. Kardas received his B.Sc. in computer engineering and both M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in information technologies from Ege University in 2001, 2003 and 2008 respectively. He is currently working as an associate professor at Ege University. His research interests mainly include agent-oriented software engineering, model-driven software development, and domain-specific (modeling) languages.

The visit is part of the project "Integration of visiting foreign experts and higher education lecturers into the teaching process as the pillar of quality development of the internationalization process at the University of Maribor", which is co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.
