Our student Kristjan Stopar won the first prize in the student competition at the 28th International Electrotechnical and Computer Science Conference ERK 2019 (https://erk.fe.uni-lj.si/erk19.html), organized by IEEE Slovenia Section. Together with his student colleagues Pia Žnidaršič and Urban Košale, Kristjan developed a device for kinesthetic navigation of the blind and visually impaired. Kristjan will represent University of Maribor at the IEEE Region 8 student competition.

The Institute of Computer Science participated at the European Researchers’ Night 2019 (http://www.ern.um.si/en), which took place on 27 September 2019. In the "research site" of Europark Maribor, the Institute of Computer Science participated with projects: The Challenges of Evolutionary Computing, Introducing Personality Identification Systems, and Modern Virtual Reality. There was a lot of interest.

Assistant Professor Niko Lukač, a member of the Institute of Computer Science, became a section editor for the field of computer science at Data & Brief magazine. The journal deals with the field of open publication of research data and receives more than 3000 submissions per year. From 16 September 2019 to 18 September 2019 FERI students: Pia Žnidaršič, Urban Košale and Kristjan Stopar have successfully repeated the workshop "Create a candy scheduler" as a part of the Summer School of Computer Science 2019 at the Electrical Engineering and Technical High School Novo Mesto (SESTG). The workshop was organized by the Institute of Computer Science and the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications. The main aim was to inspire students to study technical sciences.

Publons (https://publons.com) has published a list of winners for "2019 Peer Review Awards – Top 1% in Field". In the field of Computer Science, Niko Lukač and Marjan Mernik from the Institute of Computer Science and Iztok Fister Jr. and Marko Hölbl from the Institute of Informatics were included in the list. The Institute of Computer Science organized the 34th Workshop on Nature Inspired Algorithms, which took place on September 13, 2019 at Boč.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Institute of Computer Science is organizing the Summer School of Computer Science (https://cs.feri.um.si/poletna-sola/poletna-sola-racunalnistva-2019/). From August 26 to August 30, 2019 the following workshops will be held:

• Programming for girls,
• Create a candy scheduler,
• Let's develop our first computer game,
• My first Android game.

This year a record high number of participants are coming to the Summer School of Computer Science. We look forward to bringing to 70 participants a wonderful world of computing and information technology in an interesting way, acquainting them with the basics of programming. There is a lot of interest for studying computer science and information technologies in the world as well as in our country. At the workshops, participants will also be able to get an answer whether this is a profession that they would like to pursue in the future.

On Saturday, June 8, 2019, the Cankarjev dom hosted the ZOTKINI TALENTI 2019 (https://www.zotks.si/novice/zotkini-talenti-2019). At the event, the Institute of Computer Science presented itself with the exhibit "Augmented Virtual Reality".

Assist. Prof. Matej Črepinšek received the golden prize at the 53rd Young Researchers' Summit of Slovenia 2019 for mentoring a research project in the field of computer science or telecommunications. The event was organized by the The Association for Technical Culture of Slovenia (ZOTKS). Congratulations!

Prof. dr. Marjan Mernik, head of the Institute of Computer Science, has become a member of the Council of Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (SQAA), https://www.nakvis.si/?lang=en. Agency council is the highest decision making body of the SQAA, which provides for the comparability and international recognition of the Slovenian higher education area, and advocates continuous improvement of its quality.

Since 2016 we have been monitoring the review work of the members of the Institute of Computer Science, UM FERI. This week we carried out 1000 reviews for over 100 SCI journals, among which: Applied Soft Computing, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Languages, Systems and Structures, Empirical software engineering, Expert Systems with Applications, IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computations, Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Neurocomputing, Pattern Recognition Letters, Software, Practice and Experience, Renewable Energy, Swarm and Evolutionary Computation, Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, Transactions on Neural Systems & Rehabilitation Engineering. This suggests that the members of the Institute are strongly involved in the review process itself and that we are recognized as quality reviewers in many areas of computer science.

The review no. 1000 by the Institute of Computer Science has been performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Božidar Potočnik. Congratulations!

Eligibility: Entrants must be the first author on a manuscript which is submitted and accepted to the Journal of Computer Languages (COLA) in 2019.
Judging Criteria: Papers will be judged for novelty, significance and contribution to the area of the Journal of Computer Languages.

Organizing Committee of the ROSUS 2020 Conference

A short lecture titled "Artificial intelligence and its current progress in practice" was held for the students of Secondary School of Economics and Gymnasium Maribor. We showed implementations of artificial intelligence in different real-world scenarios with a focus on its use in economics. The lecture was held by Mladen Borovič and Štefan Kohek, both members of the Institute of Computer Science.
