"Data science and big data are the next big thing in the automotive industry, and if you would like to find out how exactly and what the future holds, come to lecture room G2-P02 on May 19, at 10:15, to hear about Big Data in Automotive Industry from Dr. Michael Hammer, PhD and Dr. Sandi Pohorec, PhD from AVL List GmbH, the world’s largest independent company for the development of powertrain systems with internal combustion engines. Both speakers are heavily involved in all of Big Data related activities within AVL List.
Within the automotive industry traditional development goals have always been about improving the driver safety and comfort. Today, with new technologies, such as assisted or autonomous driving, connected cars or new sensor technologies, like vision systems, help enormously in achieving these goals. They also create an enormous amount of data being in cars and this data is increasing rapidly. Simultaneously, the challenges in developing and testing these new elements and their connectivity are also increasing.
AVL, as a long lasting development partner of powertrains and development tools for manufacturers all over the globe, is taking the challenge of this new area of digitalization. Big Data technologies are essential elements to generate value out of the above mentioned data. This presentation should give you an overview of AVL, the challenges regarding data and digitalization and a first overview on the upcoming use cases for data science and Big Data technologies in automotive industry.
Dr. Michael Hammer is, in addition to being in charge of coordinating “Big Data” related activities within AVL’s Powertrain Engineering, a manager for reliability engineering at AVL List Graz, Austria. Dr. Hammer studied mechanical engineering with focus on analytical and numerical mechanics. His PhD was focused on numerical mathematics applied to contact mechanics, solving large displacement and large deformation frictional body contact problems. After completing his PhD, he joined AVL in 2013 working on tribology in combustion engines and damage modelling. Since 2015 he has been in charge of the reliability engineering team at AVL List in Graz, focusing on big data issues.
Dr. Sandi Pohorec is a data scientist responsible for research and development of Big Data technologies within AVL’ Instrumentations and Test systems, focusing on the data managements and processing software tools developed by AVL. Dr. Pohorec studied at Faculty for electrical engineering and computer science (FERI). His PhD was focused on validation of machine learning with automated natural language processing methods. Since joining AVL in 2014 he is working on various research projects and designing the future, Big Data, architecture of AVL’s data management and processing products.
